Beer Release

Four Lagers. One Year. Why East Brother's 2026 Seasonal Series Is Built to Last.

Here's the thing about lagers: everyone thinks they're simple. Clean. Easy. The training wheels of the beer world. And we get it, for a long time, "lager" meant the watery stuff your uncle bought in a 30-pack. That's not what we're talking about.

What we're talking about is Czech Dark Lager. Helles. Festbier. Munich Dunkel. Four styles that have been quietly outlasting every trend in the beer world for the better part of a century. We've built our entire 2026 Seasonal Series around them.

The craft beer conversation has been loud for years now. New hop varieties, pastry stouts, collab drops, whatever's happening on social media this week. We're not above any of it, but it's not really where our heads are. We keep coming back to the same question: what are the beers that deserve more of people's attention? What's actually good, like genuinely, historically, undeniably good?

Lagers. Every time. The answer is ALWAYS lagers.

So that's 2026. Four of them, spread across the year. Each one is rooted in a tradition older than most countries and brewed exactly the way it should be.

THE CANS GOT AN UPGRADE

The old seasonal cans were cream with colored text. Clean and simple. We liked them. But this year, we wanted the seasonals to feel more like the rest of the East Brother lineup. So we brought in the color blocking.

If you know us, you know the color blocking: that bold band of color across the bottom, a complementary color above, and our script logo right in the center. Each seasonal release gets its own color. The Helles is blue. The Czech Dark, Festbier, and Dunkel each have their own. Line them up, and you've got the whole year on your counter.

At the bottom of each can, four small icons: spring flower, summer sun, fall leaf, winter snowflake. One for each season, one for each beer.

The 2026 Lineup, Beer by Beer

Czech Dark LagerThe One That Started the Year

5.7% ABV | Available Now

Tmavé Pivo — that's what they call it in Czech. It means dark beer. The style has been brewed in Bohemia for hundreds of years. It came before the pilsner, which most people think of as the original Czech beer. The dark lager got there first.

It pours dark brown with a reddish tint. Chocolate and burnt sugar on the nose, rich on the palate, but clean and dry on the finish. Lighter than it looks. At 5.7% ABV, it's technically a session beer. Most people are surprised by that.

One small thing: If you grabbed a 4-pack earlier this year, it's in the old label. First beer of the season, last to get the memo.

On draft and in 4-packs at all three taprooms and wherever we distribute near you.

Helles LagerThe Gold Standard

Nobody talks about the Helles the way they should. It's the beer Munich drinks on a regular Tuesday. It’s not a special occasion beer or a beer for people who really consider themselves “beer people.” Just a good, honest lager that shows up cold and clear and doesn't ask anything of you.

It's also one of the hardest beers to brew well. There's nothing to hide behind, no dark malt or big hop flavor. If something's off, you'll taste it immediately. Ours is soft and bready, with a dry finish that makes another one sound like a pretty good idea.

On draft and in 4-packs at all three taprooms and wherever we distribute near you.

FestbierFest in the West

Releasing September, 2026

Festbier is the beer Munich chose to represent itself at Oktoberfest. For decades, they poured a darker, heavier beer called Märzen. In the 1950s, the big Munich breweries switched. They wanted something lighter — a beer you could drink all afternoon without slowing down. That became Festbier, and it's been Oktoberfest's official pour ever since.

Ours is golden, smells like fall should smell — floral and earthy from the Hallertau hops grown in Bavaria. Honey and fresh bread on the palate. 5.8% ABV. 24 IBUs. Built for rounds, not analysis.

This September, we're bringing it west, put it in your calendar.

Munich DunkelThe Year's Last Word

Releasing November, 2026

The Dunkel is older than the pilsner. It was the original beer of Munich, back when all lagers were dark. There's no flash to it — toasted bread, caramel, a warmth that settles in on a cold night. You don't analyze it. You just drink it.

Rob said it simply about last year's batch: "Simple on the surface, but deeply satisfying when you take the time to notice it."

Full details closer to November.

A Note on the Pre-Pro Lager

The Pre-Pro isn't happening this year, and we want to be straight about why.

It's one of our favorite beers to make. It's based on American lagers before Prohibition, brewed with six-row malt, flaked corn, and Cluster hops. Those ingredients are what give it that clean, slightly sweet flavor with a soft herbal finish that you won't find anywhere else in our lineup. Change them, and you're making a different beer.

This year, we couldn't source them to the standard we need. We could have substituted. We didn't. A Pre-Pro brewed with the wrong ingredients is just a lager with a good story attached to it. We're not interested in that version. It'll be back when we can do it right.

Why East Brother Beer Co. Sponsors the Oakland Ballers (It's Not Just About Baseball)

When the Oakland A's left town after 57 years, they took something with them that felt bigger than baseball. Oakland had been a sports city. A working city. A city that showed up. And then, one by one, the teams were gone.

Two friends from high school decided that wasn't the end of the story.

In 2024, those two friends built California's first Pioneer League expansion team from the ground up. They took a city park in West Oakland — historic Raimondi Park in the Prescott neighborhood — and turned it into a baseball diamond worth playing on. In two months. No corporate backing, no stadium deal, no guarantee it would work. Just two people who saw something missing from their city and decided to build it themselves.

In their second year of existence, the Oakland Ballers won the Pioneer League championship. They set the modern era record for regular season wins. They won four consecutive win-or-go-home playoff games. The city gave them the key. There was a parade.

Two FRIENDS. One Story.

East Brother Beer Co. was founded by Rob Lightner and his co-founder, Chris — two friends who spent decades watching a brewery take shape in their minds before they finally built it. They set up in Richmond, California, a few miles up the East Bay shoreline from where the Ballers would eventually plant their flag in West Oakland. They brewed the beers they'd always wanted to drink: classic styles, executed with precision, without apology.

The tagline they chose wasn't clever marketing copy. It was a statement of fact: Beer is Labor.

When we heard the story of the Ballers — two friends, a city park, two months, and a championship — we recognized something immediately. Not just the underdog arc or the East Bay geography, but the particular kind of stubbornness it takes to build something real from nothing, in a place people have already written off, and do it the right way.

That's the same stubbornness that drives every batch of beer we brew.

What "Built to Last" Actually Means

East Brother's 2026 theme is Labor of Lagers: Built to Last. It's a deliberate celebration of heritage and craftsmanship — the kind of brewing that doesn't chase trends, doesn't cut corners, and doesn't compromise when the ingredients aren't right.

This year, when the specific malts needed for our Pre-Pro Lager fell short of what we required, we pulled the beer from the lineup entirely rather than brew an inferior version. We'll make it when we can make it right. A beer brewed with the wrong ingredients isn't the beer — it's just a beer with a story attached to it. We're not interested in that version.

The Oakland Ballers understand this instinctively. They didn't build a team for a quick season and a press release. They prioritized signing Bay Area players — athletes from Cal, Cal State East Bay, Berkeley High, kids who'd grown up playing against each other in the same leagues. They built something with roots. And in year two, those roots held.

Built to last isn't a slogan. It's a standard.

The Beer at Raimondi Park

The East Brother beer you'll find at Raimondi Park is the Blonde Ale — and it fits that environment like it was made for it.

At 4.2% ABV, it's designed for a long afternoon in the sun. Pale-golden, crisp, clean finish with a touch of honey from the Brumalt malt. Low bitterness, effervescent, endlessly drinkable. It's not a beer that demands your attention — it's a beer that earns your second one. The game gets the focus. The beer just keeps showing up in your hand.

That's exactly what a ballpark beer should be. Not flashy. Not complicated. Just cold, well-made, and there when you want it.

The Blonde Ale is a new-ish core beer for East Brother — new branding, new 12oz format in 2025 — and it's one of the beers we're proudest of. It takes discipline to brew something this clean. There's nowhere to hide in a 4.2% blonde ale. Every ingredient has to pull its weight.

Sound familiar?

Come Find Us at Raimondi

The Ballers' 2026 season kicks off in late May at Raimondi Park in West Oakland. Games run every day but Monday through early September — weekdays at 6:35pm, Saturdays at 4:35pm, Sundays at 1:05pm.

It's the most fun you can have watching baseball in the Bay Area right now. The atmosphere is genuine, the community is real, and yes — the beer is cold.

East Brother Blonde Ale is available on draft and in cans across the Bay Area. If you want to find it near you, visit eastbrotherbeer.com or ask for it at your local bottle shop or bar.

Beer Is Labor. Go B's.

Bohemia's Quiet Masterpiece

At East Brother Beer Co., we’ve always been drawn to the styles that have stood the test of time; beers built on craft, patience, and a sense of place. Our newest release, Czech Dark Lager, belongs to a tradition that never felt the need to chase the spotlight.

In its homeland of Bohemia, Tmavé Pivo (literally "dark beer") wasn't a novelty or a seasonal gimmick; it was the comforting heartbeat of the local pub. While the world still celebrates the 1842 "Golden Revolution" of Pilsner, the dark lager remained in the shadows—soulful, steady, and deeply misunderstood.

What Makes a Czech Dark Lager Different?

One of the reasons this style is often overlooked is that it’s frequently filed under the wrong label. Many drinkers see a dark lager and immediately think of a German Schwarzbier. While the comparison makes sense at a glance, the experience is fundamentally different.

  • The Flavor Profile: Unlike the lean, roasty finish of a Schwarzbier, a Czech Dark Lager is all about the bread crust and caramel.

  • The Body: We’ve utilized Weyermann Melanoidin Malt to mimic the traditional decoction mashing process, giving the beer a rich, "chewy" mouthfeel without being heavy.

  • The Roast: To achieve that deep garnet color without the harsh bitterness of a stout, we use a precise blend of Thomas Fawcett Pale Chocolate and Simpsons Black Malt. It’s cocoa and toast, not burnt coffee.

Local Roots, Continental Soul

While the inspiration is European, the soul of this beer is local. Our malt bill features California-grown grains from Admiral Maltings, including their Feldblume, Admiral’s Hearth, and Kilnsmith varieties. These malts provide a fresh, toasted-biscuit foundation that grounds the beer in our own backyard.

To balance that rich maltiness, we turned to a classic European hop profile. We used German Magnum for a clean, stable bitterness, layered with the noble, herbal aromas of Hallertau Mittelfruh and Tettnang. Fermented with a traditional German Lager yeast, the result is a beer that is incredibly complex yet remarkably "crushable."

A Beer Built for Another Round

Some beer styles arrive with fireworks and disappear just as fast. Others earn your loyalty the way the best local spots do—slowly, warmly, and without needing to shout.

Czech Dark Lager is that second kind of classic. It offers a unique middle ground for the modern craft drinker:

  1. Complexity for the Connoisseur: The layers of Admiral and specialty malts provide plenty to talk about.

  2. Sessionability: Despite its dark hue, it finishes crisp and clean, making it a beer built for another round.

In a world of loud flavors, there is something radical about a beer that is simply, reliably good.

Pre-Prohibition Perfection: The Revival of the Classic American Lager

East Brother Beer Co's Pre-Prohibition Lager is the perfect beer for summer

Rediscover the Lager That Built America

In a world full of fruit sours and double dry-hopped hazies, it’s easy to forget what made America a beer-drinking nation in the first place: the humble lager. At East Brother Beer Co., we’re honoring that legacy with our own interpretation of the Pre-Prohibition Lager, a crisp, clean, and flavorful beer that brings history into your glass.

There’s no strict industry definition for this style—and that’s the point. Our version is inspired by tradition but made our own: uniquely East Brother, proudly Californian, and rooted in the craft and culture of the Bay Area.

What Is a Pre-Prohibition Lager?

Before the beer industry changed with Prohibition, American lagers had more character. These beers were brewed with a touch more malt, traditional ingredients, and a commitment to flavor that often gets lost today.

A Pre-Prohibition Lager is a slightly stronger, fuller-bodied version of the standard American lager. Expect a golden color, mild bitterness, and a smooth finish—all brewed with classic techniques that celebrate the origins of U.S. beer culture.

East Brother Beer Co's Pre-Pro Lager | Discover the Lager that built America

The Malt That Makes It Matter: Atlas 6-Row from Admiral Maltings

The soul of our Pre-Pro Lager lies in its malt, and not just any malt. We brew it with Atlas, a California-grown 6-row barley sourced from Admiral Maltings, one of the few traditional floor malt houses in the U.S.

But this isn’t just any grain. Atlas barley has a story that goes back 500 years. It originated as a Mediterranean landrace brought to California by Spanish settlers, believed to trace its roots to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Thriving in California’s climate, it became a local landrace barley. Around 1900, UC Davis selected and refined this grain into its first malting barley variety—Atlas.

By the mid-20th century, Atlas was a key player in American brewing. Today, thanks to multigenerational farmer Ben Work in Paso Robles, this barley lives again.

A Classic for the Bay Area

As one of the few Bay Area craft breweries dedicated to traditional styles, East Brother Beer Co. has carved out a place for people who love beers that are straightforward and well-made.

East Brother Beer Co's Russian Imperial Stout: A Timeless Tale of Taste

In the world of craft beer, few styles boast a story as rich and intriguing as the Russian Imperial Stout. Born in 18th-century England, this robust brew was designed to endure the long journey to Russia. Its creation is attributed to London's Anchor Brewery under Henry Thrale, who ingeniously increased its alcohol content and bitterness to prevent spoilage en route to the Russian court.

A Stout That Conquered an Empire

Although Peter the Great's visit to London in 1698 sparked Russian interest in British beer, it was Catherine the Great's patronage that cemented the Russian Imperial Stout's legacy.  It wasn't just another beer; it was a brew that crossed borders and survived voyages, becoming a symbol of resilience and flavor.

The Anchor Brewery's creation wasn't initially dubbed 'Russian Imperial Stout'; that name emerged much later. In fact, the term 'Imperial' was used generally for stronger beers since the early 18th Century. The full phrase 'Russian Imperial Stout' only gained prominence in the 1970s, long after it had captured the hearts of Russian royalty. Despite its ties to Russia, the style was uniquely British, with Russian and Baltic brewers unable to replicate it due to differences in water profiles.

The Russian Imperial Stout's journey through time is as complex as its flavor profile. By World War I, this stout had nearly vanished from its birthplace, with only a few Baltic and Scandinavian breweries keeping the flame alive. The original Russian Imperial Stout saw its production in the UK cease in 1993, marking the end of an era.

Resurgence in the American Craft Beer Scene

However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Russian Imperial Stout found a new home and renewed fame in the American craft beer scene of the 1980s. U.S. breweries, known for their penchant for reinvention and experimentation, embraced this historic style. They infused it with a distinctly American bravado, leading to a plethora of variations. From Imperial Milk Stouts to Coffee Stouts, American brewers played with the recipe, introducing bold, innovative twists that redefined the style.

At East Brother Beer Co, our Russian Imperial Stout stands as a testament to this storied past. As part of our Freighter Series, it represents our commitment to crafting beers that not only echo the boldness of the freighter ships but also resonate with the rich heritage of brewing. Our seasonal Ale is more than just a beverage; it's a journey through brewing history. We've taken a classic, revered style and infused it with our passion for quality and innovation. The result? A stout that's not just a drink but a narrative of resilience, a celebration of craft, and a homage to the art of brewing.

In every sip of East Brother Beer Co's Russian Imperial Stout, you taste centuries of history, a legacy of innovation, and a commitment to excellence. Here's to a beer that's as deep and enduring as the history it carries. Cheers to a stout that's not just made, but crafted with a story to tell.

Celebrating Tradition: Dive into the Season with East Brother Beer Co's Festbier

Autumn winds are around the corner, signaling the festive season and, more importantly, the time for a cherished Bavarian tradition - Oktoberfest! While we can't all make the trip to Munich every year, the Bay Area Oktoberfest enthusiasts have a reason to cheer. We're delighted to announce the return of our much-celebrated and award-winning Festbier right here at East Brother Beer Co. Enjoy it at the taproom starting August 18th.

A Nostalgic Sip from History

For those uninitiated, the Festbier style originates from the Oktoberfest traditions of Munich, Germany. Historically, these were stronger lagers brewed in March (Märzen) and left to ferment over the summer, only to be relished during the fall festivities. As time evolved, while the Märzen style remained, a lighter yet equally flavorsome version, known as Festbier, emerged as a favorite for Oktoberfest celebrations.

What's unique about Festbier is its immaculate balance. It brings together a light amber hue, a malt-forward profile, and just the right hop bitterness to give beer enthusiasts an unforgettable drink.

East Brother’s Spin on a Classic

At East Brother Beer Co., our commitment has always been towards brewing classic, easy-drinking beers. The Festbier is no exception. Crafted with an unwavering dedication to quality, it's a heartfelt nod to Bavarian traditions, blending seamlessly with our ethos of staying true to the basics and doing them exceptionally well.

3) Cook over medium heat, whisking often, for several minutes, until mixture has thickened. Stir in mustard, Worcestershire sauce, Kinder's Garlic Salt and Kinder's The Blend

4) Add cheese, a handful at a time, and stir until completely melted. Serve warm!

The two Beers you need to drink this Summer: Pre-Pro and Double IPA

IMG_8210.JPG

After almost a year of being confined to our homes, this summer might be as close as we come as adults to replicating the bliss that was Summer Vacation. As soon as that last school bell rang, we would wander out into the world as free people, with what seemed like an endless summer full of possibilities ahead of us. Just like those good ol’ days, this summer is going to be one worth writing home about.

This summer we released TWO beers, perfect for your summer sipping. So whether you spend your summer lost in the wilderness, next to a grill, or floating down a river, our Pre-Prohibition Lager and Double IPA are the best beers to drink this summer.

East Brother Beer’s Pre-Prohibition Lager

The first of the two is a no-brainer when it comes to summer beers. Light in color, and at only 5.5% ABV, our Pre-Pro Lager will keep you cool and refreshed all day long. The Pre-Prohibition Lager, part of our Lager Series, is our take on the quintessential American Lager, the kind of Lager we were drinking long before Prohibition.

Whether you’re enjoying a classic all-American hot dog or living it up with a rib-eye steak, our Pre-Pro Lager truly shines when paired with anything that’s been grilled. So go ahead and light up the grill, and crack open our Pre-Pro, summer is just getting started.

East Brother Beer’s Double IPA

The second of our summer releases is a West Coast Style Double IPA bursting with tropical notes of papaya, mango, and pineapple. This malty Ale, part of our Freighter Series, has a slightly bitter finish with some subtle alcohol warmth.

Coming in at 8.8% ABV, our Double IPA transitions perfectly from the pool to the dinner table. This Ale can stand up to the boldest flavors, so go ahead and pair it with something smothered in BBQ Sauce or that secret sauce your Uncle always seems to have stashed in his back pocket.
