Some beers remind you why we fell in love with brewing in the first place. Not because they’re new or loud, but because they’ve stood the test of time. Munich Dunkel is one of those beers.
It’s a dark lager that’s been quietly holding its ground for hundreds of years. The kind of beer you find in a stein, not a tulip glass; smooth, steady, unhurried. When we decided to bring it into our Seasonal Series, the goal wasn’t to reinvent it. It was to brew it with the same care it’s always deserved.
At East Brother, that’s how we approach every beer: classic styles made the right way. Our Munich Dunkel is built on locally malted grain and noble hops, fermented clean and lagered cold. Nothing flashy or forced—just a dark beer made with patience and precision.
It’s the kind of pint that earns its respect one pour at a time.
Why We Brewed a Munich Dunkel
Some beers just make sense. The Munich Dunkel has been part of Bavaria’s brewing story since the 1500s, long before refrigeration or light lagers existed. It was the everyday beer, brewed for workers and anyone who wanted something comforting after a long day.
That spirit fits us. Richmond’s working waterfront was built on people who took pride in what they made, and we still carry that same pride into every batch. The Munich Dunkel is our nod to that kind of craftsmanship.
Brewed the East Brother Way
This year’s release sits at 5.2% ABV, right in our wheelhouse: balanced and built for repeat pours. It pours deep mahogany with ruby highlights and a light-tan head that lingers. The aroma hits with rich malt character thanks to Admiral Maltings Midway and Pacific Victor, rounded out by Weyermann Caramunich and Carafa Special Type 2 for depth.
On the palate, you get dark chocolate, toasted bread, and a hint of coffee, with a restrained sweetness that fades into a clean, dry finish. Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Tettnang hops lend a quiet balance.
Like all our lagers, it’s brewed with patience and purpose. No shortcuts.
A Beer for the Workweek and the Weekend
The Dunkel marks the final release in our 2025 Seasonal Series, a fitting close to a year that’s taken us through every shade of the brewing calendar. From bright and crisp to bold and roasty, each seasonal has told its own story; this one feels like the exhale after a long day.
You’ll find it on tap now in our Richmond, Mill Valley, and San Francisco taprooms, and it’s rolling out to stores across Northern California in the coming weeks. Use our Beer Finder to track it down.
Whether you’re clocking out in Richmond, catching up with friends in San Francisco, or winding down in Mill Valley, Munich Dunkel fits the moment. It’s meant for cooler nights and easy company.
